Ardwell is noted by Symson in 1684 as one of the principal houses in the district (though the ONB states it was built in 1702 - possibly the date of some additions or alterations.) A large addition was made to it in the 1870s. It now stands three storeys high, with crowstepped gables.

Photograph albums of daughters of house c. 1905 with their weddings etc and very full photographic coverage of the parent's house, gardens etc. local church, wedding banquet under trees in garden, drawing room, tapestries on stairs etc etc.

Miss Frances married Earl of Cassillis, Miss Margaret heir to Newhailes.
