Archaeology Notes

HP50SE 4 5688 0234

At HP 5687 0238, on the gentle S slope of a hill, are the turf-covered footings of a large oval building measuring 15.0m N-S by 5.8m E-W internally, over walls, 2.5m thick and 0.5m high. Both wall faces, containing many large slabs set on edge, are occasionally visible. The inner wall face curves inwards to form a "waist" indicative of a double chambered structure; the entrance being from the lower S end. Within the structure is a large earthfast stone 0.8m high.

This building cannot be positively classified without excavation, but there is little doubt that it is a Ne/Ba homestead similar in plan to the Benie Hoose of Whalsay (HU56NE 5).
