A cross may have stood on the summit of the conspicuous knoll of Craigencross, formerly Knockincross, situated on the 'Spital Croft of Craighmore', lands which belonged to the Knights Templar, and which were sold to the Knights of St John in the late 15th century by Uchtred M'Dowall.
