Archaeology Notes

NT86NE 7 8563 6874 to 8460 6897.

(NT 8470 6899 to 8562 6873) Old Road (NAT).

OS 6" map, Berwickshire, 1st ed., (1856).

This consists of two parallel ditches, 7.0m. apart, each averaging 0.5m. in width and 0.1m. depth, with the upcast on the outside. The area between them is very level and comparatively clear of heather. There are no wheel ruts or other signs of its use as a road, and it does not seem to be metalled. It ends abruptly at NT 8563 6874 on the east and NT 8460 6897 on the west, and for the last 110 metres on the west changes directions to the WSW and follows the parish boundary. The angles at the point of change are clear and sharp. In view of its abrupt ends, mathematically straight lay-out, considerable breadth, and unspoiled surface, it is difficult to accept the view that it was a road, but it is equally difficult to suggest an alternative function.

Visited by OS (CJP) 27 September 1956.

This feature, running from NT 8450 6895 to NT 8563 6874, is generally as described by Pedley. No further information could be discovered.

Visited by OS (RD) 11 March 1966.
