Archaeology Notes

NT85SW 10 8279 5436 to 8277 5330.

(NT 8279 5436) Kelloe Bastle: A square of cottages, built on the site of an old bastle or keep, from which it derives its name. Similarly, Kelloe Dovecot, a row of cottages at NT 8277 5330, derives its name from a dovecot having stood there. (Probably associated with the bastle).

Name Book 1857; New Statistical Account (NSA, A Cuthbertson) 1845.

The cottages built on the site of Kelloe Bastle have been totally demolished and the site is now under plough.

There is no evidence of a dovecot at the cottages at NT 8277 5330.

Visited by OS(IA) 14 December 1972.
