Archaeology Notes

NT82NW 17 8499 2715.

Linear Earthwork, above Green Humbleton. About a quarter of a mile SE of the fort on Green Humbleton the old road from the Halter Burn to the Border splits to mount a steep rise in the ridge that divides the Shielknowe Burn from the Humbleton Sike. A linear earthwork consisting of a ditch and bank runs across the base of this rise, transversely to the tracks of the road which graze and may have removed part of its NE end. Laid out on a slight curve, it now measures 30yds. in length along its arc; earth and broken stones appear where the turf has been removed. RCAHMS 1956, visited 10 September 1945.

(For the fort on Green Humbleton (RCAHMS 1956 No.1041), see NT82NW 22)

Situated at NT 8499 2715 this minor earthwork is generally as described. The bank is c 4.0m wide and 0.7m high with an inner ditch c 0.5m deep. The work may be associated with a similar feature c 150.0m to the SE which appears to be part of a drovers' stance.

Visited by OS(RD) 28 November 1967.
