Extensive blocks of rig have been recorded on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 2000) on the hillsides surrounding Hownam Rings. Several field banks can also be seen, in at least one case overlying the rig.

Hownam
A series of cultivation remains are situated on the slopes of Hownam Rings, to the SW of Hownam Burn and E of Bucht Sike. The cultivation remains cover at least 100ha in extent, and comprise plots of broad curvilinear rig, in addition to several field banks and enclosures. The broad curvilinear rig is defined by both deep furrows and shallow grooves; the latter also often subdivide the rig. Most of the rig is aligned along the contour, but on the lower NE-facing slopes the furrows are aligned partly across the contour. Plots of narrow straight rig are situated on the lower N-facing slopes of the hill.
