Archaeology Notes

NT61SE 11 6817 1480.

(NT 6817 1480) Dolphiston (NAT) Peel (NR) (Site of)

OS 6"map, (1958).

Tower (NR) (Site of)

OS 6"map, Roxburghshire, (1924).

An old Border keep or tower stood here. No information can be obtained concerning its history.

Name Book 1859.

A little S of the site of Dolphiston (or Dolphinston) Castle (see NT61SE 24) there is a plot of grass 22 yds square, long unbroken by the plough or spade, which is alleged to have formerly been furnished with a watch tower.

NSA (J Wight) 1845.

No trace of the tower can now be seen.

Visited by OS(RD) 20 February 1967.

Though the authority for OS 6"map (1958) above is unknown, it would seem reasonable that if Dolphinston farm is accepted as the site of Dolphinston Castle (NT61SE 24) then this could have been the site of a successor, built either after the destruction of the Castle in 1361, or at some later time.

Information from OS recorder(IF) 18 August 1978.
