(NC 687 330) Old Shielings (NAT) (fourteen shown).

OS 6"map, (1963)

On a slight slope directly above marshy ground on the NW bank of a river are grass covered footings of fourteen or more shieling-type structures ranging in size from 4.0 by 3.0m to 7.0 by 4.0m. Some at least, are slightly scooped out of the ground and overall there is an unusual lack of stone in evidence. The general situation of flat, exposed moorland with little pasture available does make classification as shielings questionable, but there does not seem an alternative.

Visited by OS (J M) 19 April 1977.
