A little way from Haddington is Athelstanford, so called from Athelstan, an English commander slain here with his troops about 815.

Athelstan is supposed to have been killed in battle at Lug Down Burn, near the village of Athelstaneford.

This battle is said to have taken place between the Scots and the Saxons in 815, the latter being defeated and their leader killed as they crossed the Cogtail Burn in flight (see NT57NW 17). The northern and southern limits of the battlefield are marked by the standing stones described on NT57NW 13 and NT57NW 14.
