Archaeology Notes

NC60SW 9 6313 0067.

What appear to be the remains of an island consisting of a 'cairn of stones as if thrown together loosely' are reported, by local keepers, to lie in Loch Crogail (probably Loch Cracail Mor: NC 62 02), two miles north of Loch Laro (NH 60 99).

F O Blundell 1913; Information from Donald MacKenzie, Inland Revenue, Lairg.

NC 6313 0067. At the southern end of Loch Cracail Beag is a small island, the only one in either Loch Cracail Mor or Loch Cracail Beag. It is about 8.0 metres from the shore, and measures 11.0m by 6.0m and 0.6m high, with a covering of turf and trees. As a landing was not possible at the time of visit, it could not be determined whether the island is artificial or not. As it is the only island and the levels of the lochs have not been raised, it is assumed that this is the possible crannog mentioned above.

Visited by OS (J B) 1 December 1980.
