Archaeology Notes

NT50NE 13 58 09.

No trace now remains of the house of Appotsyde which was situated on the Harwood Burn, in a field to the W of Harwood Mill (NT 584 096) and about a mile from Hobkirk church. The house belonged to the family of Loraine, a name long extinct in the district. (A fragment of a cross-head, removed from the foundations, is at Harwood House - see NT50NE 8.)

A O Curle 1904

Apotesyde was in the possession of the Turnbulls at the beginning of the 17th century (R Pitcairn 1833). In 1610 Francis Hammilton was retoured heir to his father James Hammilton of Apethside in the lands of Apethside and Tytus with the common pasture of Fewrewell in the barony of that name (Retours).
