Archaeology Notes

NT45NW 11 41 59.

Bell alleges that the foundations could still be traced at Black Castle (NT 411 593) of what he regarded as the remains of a Border fortalice, the fore-runner of the mid-19th c Cakemuir Castle (NT45NW 1).

Bell 1893

No knowledge of foundations at Black Castle could be obtained at either Cakemuir Castle or Black Castle, though at the latter, Miss M Grant stated that "Castle Moor" field was situated at NT 4045 5950.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 15 December 1964

Miss Grant states that her father believed that Black Castle stood on the nettle-covered slope near Blackcastle farm steading.

J Mackay 1979
