Archaeology Notes

NT44NW 15 4362 4956.

The cropmarks of two palisaded enclosures on top of an un-named knoll overlooking the Gala Water, 350m E of Allanshaugh farmsteading, have been identified from aerial photographs. A circular palisaded enclosure is defined by a very narrow ditch. Measuring approximately 38m in diameter with no indication of an entrance, the palisade kinks outwards slightly on the N side. Two sides of the second enclosure which is oval in shape with a double palisade boundary, are visible intersecting the S half of the circular enclosure. Measuring at least 52m by 38m, the palisades kink inwards on the N side.
