The remains of Howliston Tower, an ancient castle with 4ft thick walls, are incorporated in the present farmhouse. According to Stow parish register it was occupied by John Hume in 1626 and James Mitchell in 1690.

The ruins of this tower measure 11.1m x 6.6m over walls 1.1m thick.
