OS 6" map (1853)
The site of a mansion house, property of the Earl of Dalhousie. Nothing of it remains, but part of a sunken wall, and a pump house (noted on (M) 3) are said to have had some connection with it.
Name Book 1853
Cockpen House, home of the Laird of Cockpen in the well-known song, was purchased by the Earl of Dalhousie in 1785 and demolished soon after.
SDD List 1964
No remains of Cockpen House are visible; its site is denoted by a level piece of pasture overlooking the river. The wall mentioned in the ONB is some 32.0m long and acts as a retaining wall on the edge of the river bank. It does not seem to be of any great age, and may be an old garden wall.
