(NT 3161 6982) Bell's Law is a small artificial mound. It is said that it was thrown up by an army who encamped in the vicinity, but nothing authentic can be ascertained.
Name Book 1852
An oval mound, much mutilated, high and steep-sided to the N and NE, falling away gradually to the S, it measures approximately 29.0m x 19.0m x 1.8m in maximum height. It is probably a spoil heap. No further information was obtained locally.
Visited by OS (VEL) 4 February 1954
This artificial mound is composed of an admixture of earth, stone, and coal fragments. It is almost certainly a deposit from nearby coal workings.
Visited by OS (JP) 11 December 1975.
This mound is clearly visible on vertical air photographs 106G/SCOT/UK 140 5092-3 (flown 3 July 1946). It appears to be situated on the summit of a rise and within arable ground.
