Burntisland, Old Pier

The 'old pier' at the site marked 'Bath House' in the eastern outskirts of Burntisland is shown on the 25-inch OS map that was surveyed in 1854 as reaching at least 430 ft (131m) below high-water mark, but today nothing survives except a short length of its landward portion, which was apparently rebuilt as the discharge of a small watercourse, together with a rickle of stones and boulders running out seawrds from it. Another, slighter, rickle cand be seen 50 yds (45m) to the W, and this, although not marked on the map, no doubt also represents the reamins of a pier or jetty. One or other of these structures was evidently used for the shipping of lime in the 19th century, and it may be noted that part of the former road to a limekiln marked on the map of 1854 seems to have been perpetuated in the layout of the modern streets.
