The Penny Well belonged to the manor house of Grange (NT27SE 79). It is traditionally said to be a holy well, associated with the convent of Sciennes (NT27SE 92), its water having curative power. It was restored by Sir Thomas Dick Lauder of Grange House, but about 1870 its water ceased to flow, and the well again fell into disrepair. Digging in 1887 uncovered the original trough of the well at a depth of 5ft. The well itself was again restored c. 1892, the town water supply being substituted for the original spring.
