Archaeology Notes

NT27SE 435 2599 7393

A causeway, 'composed of irregular rounded stones' closely rammed together, and below them was a firm bed of forced soil coloured with fragments of brick, bearing a very close resemblance to the more southern portions of the Roman military way recently exposed to view in the vale of Melrose', was revealed beneath the apse and part of the N aisle by Wilson excavating at the time Trinity College Church (NT27SE 37) was demolished. The same causeway was noted beneath Trinity Hospital when it was demolished.

D Wilson 1851.
