(NT 2222 6231) Martyrs' Tomb (NAT)

OS 6" map (1908)

See also NT26SW 10.

A plain tombstone erected in 1738 to the memory of the Covenanters who fell at the Battle of Rullion Green "on the 28th Nov. 1666" (J Gibson 1881; J H Thomson 1903), is inscribed with the names of the Rev. J Crookshanks, Mr A McCormack and about 50 others (Name Book 1851). The stone was formerly placed to the NE and was lifted to this position by a late proprietor (J K Hewison 1908).

C S Terry 1905

This stone, enclosed by an iron railing, is almost certainly a monument, and not a tomb.

Re-surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 23 February 1970

No change to previous field report.

Visited by OS (BS) 10 December 1975.
