Archaeology Notes

NT24SE 45 25203 40413.

(NT 2519 4041) The present facade of the County Hotel evidently dates from the 18th century. The existence of a barrel-vaulted cellar at the E end of the building at ground floor level suggests, however, that a portion of the structure may be as old as the 16th or 17th century, and may perhaps have formed part of one of the six "bastel-houses" that are known to have been standing in Peebles in 1870.
