(NT 1660 6750) Site of Curriehill Castle (NR)

OS 6" map (1914)

The offices attached to the mansion called Curriehill are erected on the site of Curriehill Castle. Two small portions of the walls of the old castle form part of the walls of the barn. The castle is said to have been a place of importance in Queen Mary's time.

Name Book 1852; N Carlisle 1813; NSA 1845 (T Barclay)

There is nothing recognisable as the original castle wall in any of the outbuildings attached to Curriehill, although there are fragments of dressed stone which may be from an earlier building. The barn, now a pig-sty, at NT 1659 6750 (marked with siting symbol on OS plan) has obviously had several re-constructions but there is no part of it which could be identified as part of a castle.

Visited by OS (JTT) 20 August 1965
