Archaeology Notes

NT15SE 20 1751 5363.

(A- NT 1751 5362) A probable enclosed cremation cemetery is situated 900' OD, 300 yds. SSE of the crossroads at Old Deepsykehead. It measures 56' in diameter within a stony bank 8-10' thick and 1'6" high. There is a 2' wide gap in the bank on the SW, and centrally placed in the interior is a circular stony mound, 12' in diameter and 1'3" high. (Information from A McLaren notebook 2, 79 and R W Feachem notebook 1960, 7).

Three circular enclosures, each situated on slightly raised ground in an area of moss.

A - A probable enclosed cremation cemetery, as described.

B - NT 1767 5365. An earthen bank 2.5m wide x 0.3m high enclosing an area 5.5m in diameter. The interior is irregular with a possible entrance in the S.

C - NT 1774 5382. The remains of a circular earthen bank 2.8m wide x 0.3m high enclosing an area 8.5m in diameter which contains a central raised platform 5.0m in diameter and 0.2m high. The E half has been destroyed.

B and C are similar to the ring enclosure at Broughton Knowe, Peebles (NT03NE 15).
