Archaeology Notes

NT14NE 33 c. 16 48.

Hammer of greenstone, 5 1/4 inches in length and 2 1/2 inches in greatest breadth across the middle of the haft hole, which is not central, but nearer the butt end of the instrument. The haft hole is 1 3/8 inches diameter, well formed with almost straight sides, but slightly wider at both ends than in the centre. The butt end of the hammer is flattened, the sides rounded, and nearly of equal width 2 inches across, and the lower part wedge-shaped. It was found some years ago on the estate of Romanno, near Peebles and donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1882 (Accession no AH 51).

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1882.
