Archaeology Notes

NT14NE 25 c.16 46.

Three felstone axes, all from Newlands (NT 1646) were purchased for the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1883 (i) (Accession no AF 242) is 5" x 3" with flat sides; (ii) (AF 243) is 4 1/4" x 2 1/8", chipped on one side (iii) (AF 244) is 3 1/2" x 1 7/8" with a pointed butt.

The axe that is held in the Royal Museum of Scotland under accession number NMS AF 242 has been petrologically attributed to group VI (artifacts of epidotized intermediate tuff of the Borrowdale Volcanic Series from the Great Langdale and Scafell areas of Cumbria).
