Archaeology Notes

NC45SW 4 417 549.

NC 416 550. Shielings or clachan consisting of a rectangular structure, 44ft by 12ft, with rounded corners, set on a knoll at NC 4170 5499, a circular structure 12ft in external diameter at NC 4166 5487, and six oval structures averaging 16ft long and 11ft wide. The remains of a wall, possibly the head dyke of the complex, runs from NC 4165 5498 to NC 4180 5505. Built against it at NC 4175 5499 is a rectangular structure, 10ft by 8ft.

Information contained in letter and field notes from K Reid 25 September 1978.

At NC 417 549, in a sheltered valley about 200ft OD, are the footings of eight shielings, with a head dyke around the S and E sides of the group. The shielings are of turf and stone construction, generally oval or rectangular with rounded ends on average 3.5m by 2.5m. The 'rectangular structure. . . set on a knoll' noted by Reid is two closely-adjoining shielings; the structure built against the head dyke cannot be located. Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (N K B) 27 November 1978.
