This small basin, known as Port Buchan, formerly possessed cargo handling facilities for Broxburn.

This wide basin, the base for the Buchan Canal Society, is overlooked by sheltered housing and there is a derelict old canal cottage situated at the point where the canal takes a swing to the NE.

This basin is marked as Port Buchan on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Linlithgowshire 1856, sheet 6) and is visible on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1983) and on the OS 1:10000 raster map (ND), with the adjacent road marked as Port Buchan.

Activities

Watching Brief (1 April 2014 - 3 April 2014)

An archaeological watching brief was carried out at three canoe access/egress points along the Union Canal located at Broxburn (NT 0776 7233) Bridge 51 (NS 9571 7671) and Polmont (NS 9304 7798). A section of the canal wall was exposed at Broxburn- no other features of archaeological interest were uncovered.
