Archaeology Notes

NT07NE 10 0965 7899.

There are the vestiges of a small Roman camp, some distance E of Abercorn, at a windmill.

R Sibbald 1710

Windmill Knowe (NT 0965 7899) was surmounted by a windmill, all traces of which have vanished. In several published accounts, it is said to have been the site of a small Roman camp or watch tower, but there are neither traditions in the locality to this effect, nor any remains to indicate a camp. The ground has been much altered in laying out the avenue and plantations leading to Hopetoun House.

Name Book 1855

Other than recent landscaping, there are no structures on this ridge.

Visited by OS (DWR) 28 March 1974

The sites were apparently located on a ridge called Windmill Knowe within Hopetoun House estate. There are no visible remains on this ridge of either a windmill or tower. Alterations during landscaping works on this knoll may have removed any remains.

Site recorded by GUARD during the Coastal Assessment Survey for Historic Scotland, 'The Firth of Forth from Dunbar to the Coast of Fife' 19th February 1996.
