(NT 05066 63490) Murieston Castle (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map (1957)

Murieston Castle is a ruin of a free-standing 16th century keep which was rebuilt and drastically restored in 1824. Oblong on plan, rubble walled, and two storeys high, there is a roofless turret, on 16th century corbelling, at first-floor level. This is the only feature that has survived.

RCAHMS 1929, visited 1915; Scottish Development Department (SDD) List 1963; New Statistical Account (NSA 1845, J Sommers); H B M'Call 1894

Murieston Castle has been over-restored and now has the appearance of a folly.

Visited by OS (JLD) 21 February 1953 and (JP) 8 March 1974
