(NT0309 4458) Ogs Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

Ogs Castle was a small square tower which was removed about 1808, so that no traces remained in 1858, though its site was still known at that time.

Name Book 1858; G V Irving and A Murray 1864

NT 0309 4459 The present occupant of Ogs Castle, H Archibald, has a 1662 Dutch Map of the Upper Ward of Clydesdale showing Ogscastle. In 1968 he excavated the site and found the rubble core of the foundations; a plan was made and is in the possession of his daughter who works at the British Museum. The walls were about 1.0m wide, apparently measuring approximately 10.5m E-W and 4.5m transversely.

Site surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (DWR) 22 July 1971
