Archaeology Notes

HU27NW 1 c. 2461 7879

Timbers of an early Norwegian boat were found when a loch (centred at HU 246 788) was drained, July - August 1936. Norse nails were seen in the wood and bones and Norse hexagonal wooden pegs were also found. Some pieces of the woodwork have been taken to Glasgow.

L Mann (Glasgow Herald), 7 September 1936.

According to Mr. Nicholson, (M Nicholson, Brunga Hillswick) who saw the remains of the boat, it was found in the centre of the loch at HU 2461 7879.

Visited by OS (NKB) 27 April 1969.
