Archaeology Notes

NS97SW 6 948 713.

A number of years before 1877, Sir J Y Simpson had a section cut through one of the Low sandhills on Balmuir farm (NS 946 711) on the SE of the large conical sandhills. (The latter may be Kinnen Hill and Tantallen Hill.) He exposed "the remains of a small circular tower, consisting of large unworked stones, laid in rows and having the interspaces formed by their irregularities filled with smaller stones". (No records were made of this building as it was destroyed shortly after opening.) (See also NS96NE 17).

Prof Duns 1878

Although there is no local knowledge of this, the owners suggest that it may have been on Tantallen Hill (NS 948 713) which, before it was removed by quarrying, was a steep-sided conical mound.
