Aerial Photographic Interpretation (1977)

Enclosures, Roberton (Sites). On the left bank of the River Clyde, immediately to the N of the point where it is joined by the Roberton Burn, there are a number of circular ditched enclosures revealed by air photography (RCAHMSAP 1977).

(1) NS 950 289. Situated 450 m ENE of Roberton village on the SE side of the public road from Lanark to Abington (A 73), a singleton about 5 m in internal diameter.

(2) NS 950 287. About 180 m to the S of (1) there are traces of at least three slightly larger examples.

A: This cropmark, situated on the level shelf of a SE- facing hillslope, cannot be traced on the ground.

B: There is no evidence of these enclosures on the bank of the River Clyde.

All these features lie on intensively cultivated arable land.

Cropmarks on a vertical aerial photograph (OS 76/141, No. 184) reveal what may have been four ring-ditch houses situated on a terrace on the W bank of the River Clyde.

NS 9498 2876 - Possible penannular ring-ditch about 16m in diameter overall. Probably IA? recorded previously.

NS 9497 2874 - Possible penannular ring-ditch about 12m in diameter overall.

NS 9499 2871 - Ring-ditch about 10m in diameter.

NS 9496 2870 - Ring-ditch about 10m in diameter.
