(NS 8822 4593) Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1941)

On an eminence called Castle Hill stands the remnant of a tower of which little or nothing is known.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845

The castle is sited on a spur, with precipitous slopes to the valley below, except to the north where it is overlooked by rising ground.

The remains of the castle consist of the turf- covered walls of a rectangular building 11.0 metres by 16.0 metres, rising to a maximum height of 2.5 metres, on a slight mound. There are two, apparently natural ditches or hollows running across part of the neck of the spur on the north but probably serving as a means of defence on this, the most accessible side.

Visited by OS (JFC) 31 March 1955

OS (JFC) confirmed, although the remains are too amorphous for accurate measurement to be possible. The ditches to the north may be artificial.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (EGC) 12 January 1968
