(NS 8263 2940) Ladle Knowe (NAT) Motte (NR)
OS 25" map (1962)
This motte is situated in a conifer plantation on the brink of a steep descent to the Douglas Water. Oval on plan, the surface originally measure 60' N-S by about 45', but about a third of the motte has fallen away as a result of the erosion of the river bank. The flanks of the motte slope steeply and regularly down for 12' to a base which measures axially 100' by about 85'. No traces of a surrounding ditch are visible on the surface. (RCAHMS MSS., visited 1955)
Visited by OS (JLD) 10 August 1954
Measured Survey (7 June 1955)
This motte was planned by RCAHMS on 7 June 1955, after being discovered on aerial photographs examined as part of the Marginal Land Survey. The plan was inked on 14 February 1975 for inclusion within the planned Lanarkshire Inventory, but it was not included due to the scope of the final volume.
