(NS 8330 1848) Glenrae Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1959)

The line of the foundations of this ancient baronial stronghold is still visible. When the foundations were being dug out, a stone, shaped like a man's head marked RW was found.

Name Book 1856

It is now in the garden of John Kennedy, Kirkland, near Tynron. Foundation steps of a strongly built staircase have also been found here. There is no knowledge of the history of this castle.

Air photographs show surface marks extending to enclose the sheepfold S of the siting symbol.

Visible on air photographs (541.A.545:3063-4)

At the published site there is a sub-rectangular level area, approximately 20.0m across but it has no sign of any structure upon it. There is an earth-and-stone bank 1.5m wide and 0.4m high partly enclosing the south side of the nearby sheepfold (NS 8330 1845). This is similar in appearance to old field boundary and enclosure walls in the immediate vicinity and has no special significance.

Visited by OS (BS) 2 November 1978
