Archaeology Notes

NS77NE 25 c. 79 78

A battle-axe, found in 1849 at Castlecary (NS 78 78) was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1929 by J Curle (Accession no: AH 178). It measures 4 1/2" x 2 1/8" x 1 11/16", and is decorated by two incised lines. Roe dates it to "Stage I", contemporary with the transition period between the long-necked beaker and food vessel cultures.

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1929; F E S Roe 1966.

This object has been reclassified as a grooved axe-hammer and petrologically identified as metadolerite.
