(NS 7444 5705) Lady Well (NR) (site of)

OS 50" map (1971)

Lady Well: An ordinary well about 10ft deep, partly covered by flagstones placed over it. It stands on the side of a public road between Low Motherwell farm and the village of Motherwell and is said to have been dedicated to the Lady Mother - the Virgin Mary (noted as Our Lady's Well in the NSA and Origines), hence the name of the village and farms of Motherwell. It is well known in the vicinity as an antiquity, but of what date could not be ascertained. The people of Motherwell have an old privilege of drawing water from it, and there is a public right of way to it from the village.

Name Book 1858; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845 (J Clason); OPS 1851

The site of this well is occupied by a modern drinking fountain which has the name 'Lady Well' inscribed on the wall beside it; there are no traces of the original well. (Siting symbol published a short distance NE of drinking fountain.)
