Old Parish Church, Kippen. All that now remains of this church is the W gable, with fragments of the adjoining side-walls which have been extended in modern masonary to form a burial-enclosure. The gable, which has been repaired of late years, is 25ft wide by 3ft 6ins thick. The approximate plan of the remainder of the building is indicated by variations in the ground level; its total original length appears to have been about 73ft and an aisle about 15ft deep by 18ft wide projected from the centre of the N side.

The church bell, is dated 1618 and was recast in 1726. The church was either built or rebuilt in 1691, the E portion was reconstructed in 1737, and a complete repair was carried out in 1779 (Statistical Account [OSA] 1796).

It is not certain that the church has always stood upon the same site, for according to local tradition (W Wilson 1878) the pre-Reformation church and graveyard occupied a knoll immediately W of the Keir Hill of Dasher (NS69NE 13). This tradition gains some support from the fact that no gravestone of earlier date than 1707 was found in the church yard. On the other hand it may be based upon nothing more than a misunderstanding of the events of 1665, at which time a scheme for the removal of the church to a more central position in the parish was proposed but not carried out.

As described by RCAHMS.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

NS 651 948 There was a church at Kippen by 1238. The site of this church may be that occupied by the ruin of the former parish church, built or rebuilt in 1691, although an alternative tradition puts the site on a small knoll at NS 652 951, immediately W of the Keir Hill of Dasher (NS69NE 3).
