Archaeology Notes

NS66SW 28 633 616.

A small mound at Hamilton Farm (NS 633 616) was levelled about 25 years ago (1768). In it was found a "stone coffin" containing human bones (Ure 1793). No trace of a mound or tumulus is to be seen on this farm, nor do the oldest inhabitants know anything about it (Ordnance Survey Name Book [ONB] 1858).

Field investigation produced no further information (but see NS66SW 12).

D Ure 1793; Name Book 1858; Visited by OS (JLD) 31 March 1954.

The RCAHMS consider that this barrow and that referred to on NS66SW 12 are one and the same.

Activities

Note (1978)

NS c.633 617. Barrow, Hamilton Farm (Site). In 1768 a cist containing human bones was discovered in a small earthen mound on Hamilton Farm, but the site was subsequently levelled (Ure 1793, 131; NSA vi, 383). This may be the same as the cist reported to have been destroyed in that year on the nearby estate of Farme (Groome vi (1885), 291).
