Archaeology Notes

NS65NW 65 6072 5700.

NS 6072 5700, on parish boundary, N of the platform feature I reported in Discovery and Excavation, Scotland 1973, p 37, there appears to be a circular feature here, though much confused by the boundary wall and other disturbances. The fall across the feature is 1.5 m N-S and 1.75 m E-W. 20 m across approx. across boundary. There is a similar feature on a knoll at NS 607 571, comprising a circular mixture of natural outcrop and apparent rubble, on Carmunnock side of boundary. SE of same a trench like feature, with no apparent function, gorse grown. I rechecked the position of the cairn reported by RCAHMS in the Inventory to 61 m SW of old boundary bank (shown on 1:25,000) and 115 m NW of parish boundary (ref correspondence 29/11 and 17/12/79, 6/1/1980, with RCAHMS on interpretation).

Information contained in letter from T C Welsh, Titchfield, Hants to OS, 22 January 1986
