Archaeology Notes

NS65NW 38 628 581.

NS 628 581. Cairn, Easthills: This cairn is situated at the W end of a wood, under the smaller (W) mast. It measures 23m in diameter, 1.5m high, within a ruinous rubble wall. An area within its SW quadrant has been quarried to ground level; the mast, a brick building, and a fenced compound overlie most of the E portion of the cairn. There is a scatter of stones to the E, and 6m W is disturbed ground, with a possible hut. This is probably one of the 'Old Cairns' shown on Meikleham's map

(Map of the country for 10 miles around Glasgow, 1852) the site of the other appears to have been at NS 629 582.

Information contained in letter from T C Welsh to OS, 2 January 1981.

for further information see MS/76/37/12

It was noted that a radio mast and ancillary buildings had been erected within a wire fence compound in area of this site. On closer inspection. one of the buildings (a container) had been levelled by cutting through a bank or mound, revealing c.4 courses of drystone walling.

C A Miller 1994a.
