(NS 6317 5613) Cairn (NR) (site of)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1976)

A cairn formerly stood on the summit of Law Knowe, a natural knoll some 90m E of Mains. By the end of the 18th century a large part of this cairn had been robbed, but nothing had been found inside it (Ure 1793). According to Ure it measures '8 or 10 yards' (7.3m to 9.1m) in diameter and had a kerb of large flagstones. The Ordnance Survey name Book (ONB, 1857) mentions the finding of an 'urn', recovered perhaps at a later stage of destruction than that witnessed by Ure.

D Ure 1793; Name Book 1857; RCAHMS 1978, visited 1974.

No trace remains of this cairn.

Visited by OS (J F C) 11 May 1955

A low, circular mound, 25m diameter and 1m maximum height, on an elevation.

T C Welsh 1982.
