Archaeology Notes

NS60SW 1 6442 0468.

NS 6442 0468. On a tongue of land overlooking two streams, and commanding the whole of the Craig Burn valley, is a group of hut foundations. They comprise one long enclosure and two smaller rectangular ones. The long one is 13m in length by 3m in width and 0.5m deep. Adjacent are the smaller enclosures, measuring 7m x 4m and 3m x 3m respectively. All are composed of low earth and stone walls, and are pit-like in construction. The longer would appear to be a form of cattle enclosure, and the others, a dwelling and ante-chamber.

To the NE, on the opposite side of Pettyconshiel Burn lies a circular sheepfold, much dilapidated, and possibly contemporary with these pastoral enclosures. Their period is uncertain, but definitely pre-19th century from appearance.
