Gartness old mill: 18th century, now ruinous and overgrown, stands on the right bank of the Endrick Water 300 yards SSE of Gartness Bridge. A mill has functioned here since 1739 but the existing ruin probably dates from late 18th or early 19th centuries. Thse building adjoins a storehouse.

Activities

Field Visit (1 September 1952)

Old Mill, Gartness.

The old mill, now ruinous and overgrown, stands on the right bank of the Endrick Water, 300 yds. SSE. of Gartness Bridge. Though a mill has functioned here since 1739 (1), the existing ruin almost certainly belongs to the late 18th or early 19th century. A re-used window-lintel with a wide chamfer, and the stone bearing the date 1574 that appears in the S. gable of the adjoining store-house, probably came from Gartness Castle (No. 220 [NS58NW 1]).
