Glasgow Sheriff Court, Gorbals Street, 1980, Keppie Henderson & Ptnrs

Plush modernist marble-clad complex of courtrooms on several levels, with access balconies overlooking top-lit atrium. Office suites, for the busiest court in Europe, overlooking River Clyde. Relief of St Mungo above main desk, Jake Kempsell.

Archaeology Notes

NS56SE 117 5902 6448

A watching brief was carried out by W J Lindsay of the Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust in June 1981 on the site of the new Sheriff Courthouse at Carlton Place/Nicholson Street. By the time of the site visit most of the deposits had been destroyed, all upstanding buildings had been demolished and a hole 5m deep had been dug. No medieval deposits were apparent. The deposits seemed to be of geological rather than archaeological interest.
