Activities

Desk Based Assessment (7 September 2017)

Although its exact location is unknown, the New Statistical Account (1845, 670) reports that a ford once crossed the river Clyde near the Govan Ferry (NS56NE 1087). It details that this and two other fords (NS56NW 4 and NS56NE 116) could be crossed safely, as at this time the Clyde was quite shallow, a James Watt survey of 1770 recording the depth of the water at the mouth of the Kelvin to be only 3’8’’ (1.12m) at high water and 1’6’’(0.45m) at low water.

Information from HES Survey and Recording (AMcC) 7 September 2017.
