Archaeology Notes

NS55NE 12 552 553.

The present Mearns Castle (NS55NE 6, at NS 5522 5534) occupies the site of the castle of Roland de Merns (12th century). In the latter part of the 13th century, this castle and its associated village is referred to as the "Aldton". The location of the village is definitely known, it stood E of the present castle.

No traces of the old village were seen in 1954 or 1959.

Visited by OS (W D J) 12 May 1959 and (J F C) 26 March 1954.
