Archaeology Notes

NS47SE 13 c. 459 730

A Roman distance slab, presented to Glasgow University prior to 1684 is believed to have been found at Ferrydyke (NS 459 730) (W Maitland 1757); Stuart (1852), however, refers to its being dug up at Chapel Hill (NS 457 732).

The slab measures 2ft 4 1/2 ins by 2ft 2 3/4 ins and is elaborately sculptured. Its inscription reads: IMP.C.T.AE. HADRIANO.ANTONNO,AVG.PIO.P.P.VEX.LEG.XX.V.V.FEC.P.P. IIII CDXI. It is now in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.

G Macdonald 1934; L J F Keppie 1979.
